Where haven't I been...
Quite a lot of places in fact! The world is huge and it's constantly evolving. At the age of 30 I still want to travel to countries I have never been. The list gets longer, which can be quite frustrating at times when I am such a goal driven individual. I never seem to be able to complete the list. Although my goal at the age of 25 was to get every page in my passport stamped before I reached 30. I focussed on long haul trips of course in order to get the stamps, using every last drop of my annual leave cleverly and saving carefully, I did it!! I felt an overwhelming sense of achievement when I sent my battered and faded passport off to the Passport Office for renewal and it arrived back safe and sound with a replacement a few weeks later. You see that passport travelled everywhere with me. In my moneybelt all over South East Asia, Australia and South America. One time I was worried about bus hijackers in Bolivia and so I put it in my bra to keep it safe! It literally came everwhere with me. So with my huge sense of pride and a teary eye I floated out of the post office embracing it like it was an Olympic trophy and smiled all to myself about the fanstastic memories of the past five years!
My knowledge it not limited to the countries I have travelled to. My previous jobs have ensured I kept up to date with travel knowledge by working in global teams and booking business travel. Having also researched countries, kept in touch with travelling buddies, along with making new friends in all countries I have travelled to I have extended my knowledge out to places I havent yet travelled. The key is to keep up to date with what is happening in the world, learn as much as you can, be a sponge! Also talk to people and be curious, ask them questions about their lives, eat food you have never tasted, listen to the locals and watch them interact, explore the history and cultures and breathe in the air. You need to do this in order to be present in the moment in your life and to really make judgments of people and places based on your own personal knowledge and experience rather than that of the news reporter or the TV documentary. You need to see it for yourself. Oh but what if you dont like travel, you are scared of flying or you like to be in the comfort of your home. Ok I have thought about that, I have thought about global warming and diluting cultures with too much tourism and I believe that if you travel you must try to be as sustainable as possible, always look after the country you visit and adhere to the customs and cultures and be nice, because exploring and learning about our world is truely what makes it a magical place, it is imperative for our wellbeing and you will be a better person for it! There are a lot of people in this world less fortunate than us and therefore if you have the capability to do so, ensure that travel is a priority for you and your family.
